1. Oh hi! A track from my album is mastered. You may have heard the unmastered version, but—this is better.

    Hello All:

Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of…

This works for me on every level.

Andy Bowen pulls from punk, soul, hip-hop, country, folk, shoegaze, industrial, and free jazz to get at a sound that approximates the abstract things she feels through an average week. She writes lyrics that leave nothing to the imagination, because anything she thinks that isn’t abstract tends to be really specific. Her debut album, The 26th Anniversary Edition, is coming out in May 2013.

Last week I got to spend some time with her hanging out and taking photos before the release. In the meantime, check her out on SoundCloud

My darling friend Tyler took a bunch of really awesome pictures of me to use in promotion of my record. Thanks, Ty!

You don’t need to be a musician to appreciate the connection between sex and music. Still, we thought it would be fun to hear what they have to say about it. In our “Sex and Song” series, curated by drummer and producer Katy Otto, musicians share a song about sex, love, or both, and what it…

Oh hi! I wrote a piece for Bedsider! And played my synth for all the Internet to see!

Feelings I wish would never end: this one right now, wherein I am breaking into spontaneous bursts of laugher while thinking about the awesomeness of my life and listening to R.E.M.’s Out of Time. “Life is bigger, bigger than you.”

  8. Ya know. Economic justice and stuff.

  9. Institutional knowledge building in soul/hip-hop

This is impossible to talk about quantifiably, but let’s go with determinations on your basis of knowledge. Are other forms of music as “in conversation” with themselves as soul/hip-hop (which are inextricably linked, so I’ll consider them together)? Do musicians of other genres do as much work fitting themselves in with their tradition as soul/hip-hop? The public store of institutional knowledge in said genre is one of my favorite things about it. Country maybe does, but I’m less familiar with that. I certainly don’t think punk as a whole does the institutional-knowledge-building comparably (though individual scenes might). This is total grist for social media conversation, so have at it, internet.
